Marangu route is often referred to as the “Cocacola” route due to its ease of climb and popularity. For experienced climbers this route will be a breeze. For those with no climbing experience, this route provides an excellent relaxed climb, which, while not physically challenging as the other routes, gives you the same thrilling feeling of accomplishment once you get to the top.

ITINERARY:
Day 1: Arrive at the hotel in Moshi or Marangu (1-hour drive from the airport). Evening briefing at the hotel to prepare you for the climb ahead. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Drive to Marangu Gate which is 1,800 meters above sea level. Register and start the trekking towards Mandara Hut which is about 9 kilometers and 2,700 meter above sea level (4 hours). During the trekking through this portion of thick rain forest you may be lucky to see black and white Colobus monkeys which are familiar in this area. If you arrive early you have an option to visit the Maundi Crater or pass there the following day on the way to Horombo. Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut.
Day 3: Depart towards Horombo after the breakfast. After a few minutes walking you finish the forest zone and start the moorland zone to Horombo which is 3,700m above sea level (5 hours). From this point you can view Kilimanjaro’s two peaks to the north and Moshi town to the south. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.
Day 4: Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Horombo is normally bustling with hikers, guides and porters, with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatization. A hike towards the Mawenzi hut, starts early the next morning.
Day 5: After an early breakfast you start trekking to Kibo Hut (4,700m). This is a hard climb which requires 6-7 hours. You will pass Mawenzi ridge and the saddle between the two peaks before arriving at this last hut to the top. Dinner and a few hours sleep before starting the trekking to the summit, shortly after midnight.
Day 6: Start shortly after midnight of day 4. First you reach Gillman’s point (5,865m) in five hours. Gillman’s point offers great views of the Eastern Ice Fields. The view of the sun rising behind Mawenzi Peak to illuminate the plains is something out of this world. From here you walk a further 45 minutes around the crater and up to the highest point – Uhuru Peak (5,895m above sea level). Here you will be rewarded with stunning views of the spectacular glaciers illuminated by the sunrise. After a few pictures and and later proceed to Uhuru Peak via Stella point. After taking pictures of sunrise you descend down back to Kibo for breakfast and rest. After breakfast you descend to Horombo Hut for the last night in Kilimanjaro (7 hours). Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.
Day 7: This is an easy day. After breakfast walk down to Marangu Gate to collect the Kilimanjaro Gilman’s and Uhuru peaks Certificate.
