The Serengeti is Africa’s most famous park. Renowned for its wildebeests’ “Great Migration” and incredible concentrations of predators, the Serengeti is a park that guarantees an exceptional safari. It is formed by an endless grass plains which are the richest grazing grounds on the continent. It is home to the largest herds on the planet, and the highest concentrations of predators in Africa. Just focusing on the “great migration” however would not be doing the park justice for it is widely believed that if you took the Great Migration out of the park, the Serengeti is still the finest park in Africa. Vast herds, huge predator concentrations, uninterrupted views, river crossings, huge lion prides, great leopard sightings, high concentration of cheetah, some of the best camps in Africa. What more do you want in an African Safari! The Serengeti is one of those very rare places that receives so many accolades yet manages to live up to all the hype. Surrounded by amazing tribes, such as the Masai and Hadzabe, there is even more to this park than meets the eye. In a nutshell, the Serengeti is the mother of all safari parks and the most celebrated wildlife reserve in the world. It is like a lost world and in our view, there is no place in the world like it. It is absolutely outstanding! The Serengeti’s Great MigrationOriginally created to preserve the path of the Great Migration, the Serengeti and its surrounding reserves cover nearly 30,000 square kilometres. Throughout the year the huge wildebeest and zebra herds move around the plains, searching for fresh grazing grounds. Seeing the migration in the Serengeti is really the best you can get from a Tanzania Safari.   When to go: The Serengeti is one of the very few places in Africa where you can say the game viewing is outstanding at any time of year. We believe the very best time of year to be in the park is either from January to March which includes the spectacle of the Great Migration calving, or alternatively from the middle of July all the way to the middle of November when the herds are crossing the Mara river to or from Kenya. April and May sees the heaviest rains but even then, the lodges are ridiculously good value and the park is quiet, yet the game viewing remains outstanding.   Serengeti’s attractions: The number of species in the Serengeti is so high, it’s almost impossible to generate a list that will have them all. The Serengeti’s main attraction is the Great Migration, which is made of up to 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 thompson, impala and grant’s gazelles. The predator viewing here is exceptional with approximately 3-4 thousand lion and huge numbers of cheetah, leopard and hyena. Other game found in the park include eland, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant, topi, caracal, serval, bat-eared fox, hyrax, genet, porcupine, aardvark, giraffe, jackal, mongoose, crocodile, monitor lizard, aardwolf, many kinds of primates including baboons, vervet and colobus monkeys. There is also over 500 species of bird.   Serengeti – activities: The main activity in the Serengeti is daytime game driving. There is no night time safari permitted inside the park but there are a number of lodges found in the reserves adjacent to the Serengeti which allow this activity. We will provide you with all the accommodation options available when you book your safari.

International air travel

The recommended point of entry is Kilimanjaro International Airport which lies between the towns of Moshi and Arusha. The airport is located about 200 miles / 320 kilometers from the park’s southern entrance. There are a couple of international flight options such as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (daily), Turkish Airlines, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines (a few of times per week). Kilimanjaro International Airport also has daily connections with Nairobi (NBO) in Kenya, which offers more international flight possibilities. Additional airlines such as British Airways, Emirates and others fly into Tanzania’s capital Dar es Salaam (DAR). Please note that arriving at Dar es Salaam may require an extra overnight and a domestic flight on a small regional airline with luggage restrictions.

Regional air travel

The favoured route for a Serengeti fly-in safari is by flying from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK). From here it will take approximately 1 to 5 hours to fly to one of seven airstrips within the Serengeti National Park. All flights are operated by local airlines such as Grumeti Air or Coastal Aviation. Once landed at the airstrip, the lodge staff will pick you up and transfer you to your final destination where a cold drink will be ready and waiting (please allow another 45 minutes to 2 hours for road transfer – depending on the chosen lodge).

It is also possible to fly from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport (NBO) or Wilson Airport (WIL) to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). When travelling from the Lake Victoria area, the favoured airport is Mwanza Airport (MWZ). There are also direct flights from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and other national parks in Tanzania such Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
